ECREEE Promotes Integrated Approach to Sustainable Energy and Water Management in West Africa

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) contributed to regional discussions on sustainable water management and the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus at the West Africa Regional Water Forum in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on 24–25 September 2026.

The Forum brought together more than 300 stakeholders to explore solutions for sustainable water management and regional development. As Lead Partner of the WEFE thematic group, ECREEE presented the regional report on the Nexus and highlighted the importance of integrating water, energy, food, and ecosystem considerations into policies and investment decisions.

Discussions emphasized the need to strengthen regional coordination, develop and finance practical WEFE projects, build capacity, and scale up innovative solutions.

The approach is particularly relevant to West Africa’s sustainable energy transition, including the use of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies in agri-food systems. In this context, ECREEE and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) are preparing the Energy Transition Facility for Food Systems, which will support renewable energy projects, skills development, and innovation.

Through these efforts, ECREEE is promoting integrated solutions that can improve energy access, strengthen food systems, and support more sustainable and resilient development across West Africa.
