Executive Director
ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE)
Message from Mr. Gibson Okezie Obasi
Although steady progress has been made, our region continues to face major energy challenges. Many households still rely on traditional biomass for cooking, rural communities remain insufficiently electrified, and fossil fuels continue to dominate the energy mix. High transmission and distribution losses further underscore the need for a more sustainable approach, even as the region’s vast renewable energy potential remains largely untapped. ECREEE was created more than a decade ago precisely to respond to these challenges, in alignment with global sustainability goals and the ambition of a resilient and prosperous West Africa.
Guided by ECOWAS Vision 2050, ECREEE’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027 charts a clear course for accelerating the transition to clean and modern energy. Over the years, the Centre has played a pivotal role in shaping regional energy policy, supporting the development and adoption of major frameworks such as the Renewable Energy Policy, the Energy Efficiency Policy, the Bioenergy Policy, the Gender Mainstreaming Policy, and the recently approved Green Hydrogen Policy. Our collective task now is to translate these policies into concrete action on the ground.
We are grateful for the steadfast support of ECOWAS Member States, with special recognition to Cabo Verde, our host country. We also appreciate the leadership of the President of the ECOWAS Commission and the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalization for their continuous guidance and commitment.
To our partners, we extend sincere thanks for your collaboration and trust. ECREEE remains committed to working closely with governments, communities, and stakeholders to advance sustainable energy solutions across the region. With shared purpose and determination, we will continue driving progress toward universal access to clean energy by 2030 and supporting the long-term development of West Africa.
