ECREEE Showcases Regional Innovation Through ONEPlanET and EMERGE Green Africa Initiatives

Praia, Cabo Verde – 16 – 17 October 2025 – The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) hosted the ONEPlanET and EMERGE Green Africa General Assemblies and Stakeholders Workshop in Praia, bringing together experts, partners, and policymakers to advance regional cooperation in sustainable energy and climate resilience. The event highlighted how open-source tools strengthen digital sovereignty and sustainable development in the ECOWAS region by enabling local experts to analyze data and tailor solutions.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Gibson Obasi, Acting Executive Director of ECREEE, commended the strong political will and commitment of stakeholders, emphasizing that the ONEPlanET and EMERGE Green Africa projects represent vital steps toward integrated energy planning and climate action in West Africa

The ONEPlanET consortium presented its main results, developed through three diverse African case studies in the Songwe (Malawi/Tanzania), Inkomati-Usuthu (South Africa), and Bani (Mali) river basins. Key outcomes showcased include: Integrated WEF Nexus Models, Innovative Data Downscaling and the Live Tool Demos. ONEPlanET promotes integrated energy planning and data-driven decision-making to support the region’s transition to sustainable energy systems

The Energy System Modelling for Green Development of Africa (EMERGE Green Africa), a initiative which is implemented in collaboration with the European Union provides tools and knowledge that enhance clean energy production, promote sustainable resource use, and bridge cultural and socioeconomic divides. EMERGE Green Africa empowers policy makers, academics, civil society and investors to develop and promote green businesses and clean energy solutions.
