AECID Working Visit to ECREEE: Strengthening the Partnership around the Water-Energy-Food Nexus Facility

On 27–28 July 2026, the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) hosted the general coordinator of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) for ECOWAS and Nigeria for a working session dedicated to finalizing the project document for the “Energy Transition Facility for Food Systems.” This regional initiative, jointly led by ECREEE and the AECID, aims to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and energy-efficient solutions in agri-food systems across ECOWAS Member States, drawing on the integrated Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus approach.

Discussions focused on the technical and budgetary structuring of the project, as well as on the synergies to be built with other technical and financial partners, in order to optimize the use of resources and ensure complementarity of interventions in the region.

Special attention was given to the capacity-building component, with the participation of the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (ARAA), a key partner for mobilizing cooperatives and jointly implementing training and certification programmes for professionals in the Nexus sector. This visit marks a further step towards the operational launch of the project, building on the exemplary collaboration between ECREEE and AECID in support of a sustainable and inclusive energy transition for West Africa’s food systems.
