Praia, 30 July 2025 – The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) launched the celebration of its 15th anniversary today with the official ceremony held in Praia, Cabo Verde, bringing together key national, regional and international stakeholders.
The ceremony was held under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy of the Republic of Cabo Verde, Mr. Alexandre Monteiro, who praised ECREEE’s strategic role: “The Center is now a recognized institution for its role in promoting public policies, mobilizing partnerships, and implementing projects that contribute to socioeconomic and environmental development through clean energy.”
ECREEE’s Executive Director, Mr. Francis Sempore, thanked partners for their continued support and reaffirmed the Centre’s long-term commitment: “This anniversary is not only a celebration but a moment to renew our dedication to a just, sustainable and people-centered energy transition in West Africa.”
The ceremony also featured remarks from the ECOWAS Parliamentarian, Chair of the Committee on Energy and Mines, Hon Fanta CONTEH, the representatives of Partners and National Focal Institutions. This event brought together representatives from Ministries in charge of energy of the Member States, Partners, Energy Experts, ECOWAS Specialized Agencies and Directorates, such as the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA), the West African Power Pool (WAPP), the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF), the ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), the Water Resources Management Centre (WRMC), the Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU), the Energy Directorate, the Industry Directorate, the Environment Directorate, and the Legal Affairs Directorate.
The ECREEE 15 celebration runs until 31 July and includes technical sessions, training workshops, project presentations, and meetings on various topics: Ongoing projects Nexus Energy-Water-Foord & Circular Economy, Energy Transition for food systems, Mater Plan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Regional Clean Cooking Action in West Africa (ReCCAWA), Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Sustainable Energy Skills Certification System, Regional Quality Infrastructure Framework on Solar Thermal Energy. A central focus of the week will be a collective reflection on the region’s energy future through 2030, in line with ECREEE’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan.
