Lighting-Up a Low Carbon Future

The lights are going on all over Africa, home to some of the fastest growing economies in the world. Overall, that is great news. Children can study at night without breathing harmful or environmentally damaging kerosene fumes; the sense of security in poor communities, where people live in fear when night falls, is hugely increased; productivity for businesses improves as they can stay open later; and commonplace fires, caused by fallen candles or spilt fuels, become rare.

The JRC and the Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (ECREE) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration at the occasion of the Vienna Energy Forum, organised by the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). This cooperation framework will facilitate the development of common tools (e.g. country specific maps with renewable energy based electricity costs), validation of results and publication.

VIENNA, 28 May 2013 – ECREEE supports the establishment of other regional sustainable energy Centers in Africa in cooperation with UNIDO, the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).  ECREEE participated actively in the preparatory meetings of the East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE) and presented experiennces in West Africa during the EACREEE validation workshop, held form 8 to 9 May 2013 in Kampala, Uganda.

African Experts Receive Training on Small Scale Hydro Power

Vienna, 27 May 2013 - In conjunction with the Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) organized a training session on small scale hydropower (SSHP) development for 20 experts from the West African region and other parts of Sub Saharan Africa. The training was held in different parts of Austria from 22 to 27 May 2013.


The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the Government of Sierra Leone, the MRU, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) jointly organized a 3-day conference on “Women’s Economic Empowerment through Energy Access in the MRU sub-region”, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from 7 -9 May, 2013.
