ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum 2020 calls for an acceleration of decentralised renewable energy in West Africa

30 November 2020 – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held its fourth annual Sustainable Energy Forum (ESEF 2020) from 24-26 November 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s ESEF was held virtually under the high-patronage of His Excellency, Mr. Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of the ECOWAS Commission.

ECREEE signs MoU with WE4F

On October 27th, Water & Energy for Food (WE4F) and ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) signed an agreement to collaborate in West Africa to scale-up high-potential innovations in agribusiness. These innovations will increase water- and energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy to produce more and better-quality food.

SIDS DOCK and IRENA announce partnership to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy systems in small islands

07 November, United Nations Headquarters, New York, U.S.A.: SIDS DOCK, the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Sustainable Energy and Climate Resilience Organization, has signed an agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), to collaborate on promoting the accelerated deployment of sustainable renewable energy systems in SIDS. The signing ceremony took place on Thursday, 5 November 2020, by means of a virtual conference between representatives in New York City, and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
 

12 teams selected for the ECOWAS research grant

On 27 April 2020, ECREEE and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), represented by its Regional Programme on Energy Security and Climate Change in Sub-Saharan Africa, launched the 2nd cycle of the ECOWAS Research Grant Program. 

Teams of young energy researchers were invited to submit proposals for policy research in any of the energy fields: energy technologies, energy finance, energy economics, energy policy, energy and the environment/climate change, energy and development, energy law etc.

ECOWAS Condemns the Military Putsch in Mali

The ECOWAS Heads of State and Government has strongly condemned the overthrow of the democratically-elected government of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita by military putschists. They further expressed solidarity with the people of Mali and reaffirmed their firm commitment to continue to work towards a quick resolution of the crisis.

The ECOWAS Heads of State and Government made the assurances in a communique issued by the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority Mahamadou Issoufou at the end of an extra-ordinary session by video conference on 20th August 2020.
