Praia, September 1, 2026 – AECID and ECREEE, working within the ECOWAS framework, are strengthening their longstanding cooperation to accelerate access to clean energy and support more resilient and sustainable food systems across West Africa.
Through the new ECOWAS Facility for the Energy Transition in Food Systems, AECID has committed €2.5 million to support the implementation of the first phase of the project. The Facility will promote the use of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency in food systems, water management, and other productive activities related to the Water-Energy-Food Nexus.
The first phase will focus on three complementary areas: project preparation and development, capacity building, and innovation and technology transfer. At least €1.2 million will be dedicated to technical assistance and grant mechanisms to support the development of investment-ready initiatives.
The cooperation will also support the development of specialized skills and training, as well as innovation partnerships between West African and international actors. An Innovation Call for Proposals is planned for ESEF 2026.
This renewed partnership reflects the shared commitment of AECID and ECREEE/ECOWAS to move from project ideas to concrete investments, strengthen regional capacity, and mobilize additional resources for the energy transition.
Together, AECID and ECREEE/ECOWAS are working to ensure that clean energy contributes directly to more productive, resilient, and sustainable food systems across West Africa.
