Kenema, Sierra Leone – June 5th, 2026 – ECREEE in collaboration with the Eastern Technical University of Sierra Leone, successfully concluded a two-week training course on Clean Mini-Grid Design, Installation, and Inspection in Kenema, Sierra Leone.
The workshop, which took place from May 25th to June 5th, 2026, brought together 19 participants, including 12 selected professionals and three trainers from Njala University and four Eastern Technical University in Sierra Leone. The two Universities are partners of ECREEE under the framework of the ECOWAS regional program aimed at certifying skills in photovoltaic mini-grid and solar home system installation.
The intensive training was designed to strengthen the capacity of experts from ECOWAS Member States in the design, installation, and inspection of solar photovoltaic mini grids. The training methodology combined theoretical, practical sessions and field visits to Segbwema, a town in Kailahun District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone, where solar photovoltaic mini grids serve as the source of electricity for Nixon Hospital- a local medical facility.
This workshop represents the second national training delivered by trainers who participated in the regional Training-of-Trainers workshop for photovoltaic mini-grid designers, installers, and inspectors held in Benin in October 2025. The first national workshop took place in Akuse, Ghana, on 18 May 2026 and additional trainings are planned in Benin, Cabo Verde, Nigeria, and Senegal to further strengthen regional technical capacity for photovoltaic mini-grid deployment.
The program forms part of broader regional efforts to harmonize renewable energy certification systems across the ECOWAS region and to strengthen technical expertise in sustainable energy solutions.
