Development of quality standards of bioethanol for cooking and transportation of the ECOWAS Region

The ECOWAS Center for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) have received a grant from the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to implement the project "Improving the Governance of the Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency Sector in West Africa (AGoSEREE-AO)" of the Program “Promotion of a climate-friendly electricity market in the ECOWAS region (ProMERC).

The non-availability of reliable and updated energy information is a major barrier for local and international investors, policy makers, and other project developers in the energy sector in the ECOWAS Region. Information about the energy resources and their potentials are not readily available in all member states, which greatly impacts decision making, policies formulation, monitoring and evaluation of targets. Given this situation, significant opportunities are lost for sustainable energy development in the region.

DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL BIOENERGY ACTION PLAN FOR SIERRA LEONE

The energy system of West Africa is facing interrelated challenges of sustainable energy access, energy security and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Principal among the energy challenges of sustainable energy access are the widespread and unsustainable production and utilization of traditional biomass (firewood and charcoal).  This high dependence of the populations on the traditional biomass use continues to contribute to smoke-related health problems, deforestation and desertification and thereby affecting production and security.
