In partnership with ECREEE, the Clean Energy West Africa Summit will host up to 300 government officials, developers and investors working on Clean Energy Projects in the ECOWAS region. Attendees can meet representatives from ECREEE on site and will be able to understand how renewable energy markets will develop. Mahama Kappiah, ECREEE’s executive director will give the event’s opening speech for the third year in a row and he will be joined by John Yeboah who will host a discussion focused on Cabo Verde and Monica Maduekwe will join a special panel debate which asks how we can ensure there are more opportunities for women and women-owned businesses as we scale up the renewables industry.
Clean energy corridors with a combined capacity of 2GW are being planned for the West African region under plans put forward by the ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE). Speaking to PV Tech, Mr. Mahama Kappiah, said the corridor will involve connecting many 10-15MW solar PV plants, as well many other technologies such as wind and hydro. ECREEE is working on identifying which countries will have projects, where the most suitable locations are for PV parks and how they are going to distribute the projects.
ECREEE representatives will be joined by around 50 speakers including Engie’s CEO for Western & Central Africa, MIGA’S regional head for Africa, Access Power who launched their $7 million prize this month, Allianz Climate Centre, FINCA International, Camco Energy, BBOX, PEG Ghana and more. Attendees will be able to listen to sessions on both on and off-grid developments, and meet government, financiers and investors.
The summit takes place as Ghana celebrates its 60th anniversary and comes after the election of the NPP, New Patriotic Party in 2016. The manifesto the NPP put forth ahead of the election spoke of its vision “to develop a modern, diversified, efficient, and financially sustainable “Energy Economy” that will ensure that all Ghanaian homes and industries have access to an adequate, reliable, affordable and environmentally-sustainable supply of energy to meet their needs and to support the accelerated growth and development agenda we envisage for the country.”
This makes the summit extremely well-timed for investors who need to understand how to do business in the region. Despite rapidly declining costs of solar equipment and the best irradiation levels on the planet it is still essential to meet representatives in the market face-to-face.
