ECOWAS COMMISSION’S VICE PRESIDENT

Edward David Singhatey the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission is a Lawyer by profession, he holds a Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB HONS.) and a BL having successfully completed the professional Bar examination. He however started as an Electronic Technician at the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority. Changing professions he joined the Gambia Armed Forces and rose to the rank of Captain. After the change of government in 1994 Mr. Singhatey was made Minister of Defence and between July 1994 and September 2007 he was privileged to have served the Gambia government in many capacities as follows; Vice President and Minister of Defence, Minister for Presidential Affairs also responsible for Natural Resources and National Assembly Affairs, Minister for Fisheries and Water Resources, Minister for Works, Communication and Information, Minister for Works and Infrastructure, Minister for Trade, Industry and Employment also responsible for Regional Integration, Minister for Forestry and the Environment.

Having been a founding member of the ruling AFPRC party he also doubled as Secretary General of the party from 1997 to 2007 overseeing several successful landslide electoral victories. Mr. Singahtey had represented the Gambia as a member of the Council of Ministers, member of the Board of Governors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), Chairman of the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission and President of the General Assembly of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Mr. Singhatey is a highly decorated Military officer having received the Distinguished Service Medal, for bravery and service over and above the call of duty, the Good Conduct Medal, for exemplary and outstanding conduct in the performance of his duty, the Long service Medal, for extended service in the Armed Forces, ECOMOG (Hon), for contribution as Minister of Defence to the Peace Keeping Mission in Liberia, the Armed Forces Millennium Medal for outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Gambia Armed Forces. Mr. Singhatey also received the Gambia’s highest civilian awards of Grand Commander of the Republic of the Gambia (GCRG), for outstanding public service and Grand Officer of the Republic of the Gambia (GORG), for exemplary dedication to duty. Mr. Singhatey was also decorated by the Senegalese Government, in June 2002 as Commander of the Order of the Lion, for selfless dedication to duty demonstrated in the rescue and recovery effort during the Le Jola Ferry disaster. He was also decorated by the Libyan Government in September 1996 with the Order of the Revolution.

Having left the Executive arm of government in 2007 Mr. Singhatey joined the Judiciary as a Magistrate in 2011. Mr. Singhatey, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Gambia was a private legal practitioner in the Gambia prior to his appointment as Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission in March 2016.
