Representatives of Ministries in charge of energy and members of the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Working Group, met from 19 to 21 October 2022 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, to validate the draft regional policy on Green Hydrogen. This workshop also brought together representatives of the ECOWAS Commission, which included the Department in charge of Energy, the West Africa Power Pool, and the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), as well as representatives of the ECREEE’s technical partner, the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Landuse (WASCAL). This validation workshop follows the kick-off workshop workshop and the technical data validation workshop, which took place in April 2022 and August 2022 respectively.
With a population of nearly 1.3 billion population, growing at an average annual rate of 2.5% over the past 10 years, Africa has a growing demand for energy needs. The challenge of exploiting renewable energy resources requires a combination of efforts and the development of partnerships to find feasible and climate-friendly solutions. Green hydrogen is considered an environmentally friendly energy source and with a huge potential to contribute to filling the energy gap.
The regional Green Hydrogen policy development is led by ECREEE thanks to the funding support of the German Government through its Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
