ECREEE Strengthens Gender Inclusion in Energy Projects

Praia, 14 April 2026 – ECREEE in partnership with GIZ organized a one-day capacity-building workshop on “Strengthening and Anchoring Gender Transformation and Inclusion in ECREEE Projects and Initiatives” at its secretariat, bringing together staff, programme officers, and technical experts to further advance the integration of gender-responsive approaches across regional energy initiatives.

The session forms part of a broader effort to embed Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles into the Centre’s operations, following the development of a Gender Transformation and Inclusion (GTI) Toolkit. The initiative responds to identified institutional gaps in mainstreaming gender across the full project cycle—from design and planning to implementation and evaluation.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in interactive discussions and practical exercises aimed at strengthening their capacity to apply gender-transformative approaches in renewable energy and energy efficiency programs. Key discussion focused on embedding gender considerations from the outset of project design, ensuring implementation approaches are aligned with GESI frameworks, and strengthening monitoring and evaluation systems to effectively track and measure differentiated impacts across gender groups.

The workshop highlighted the importance of collaboration with regional stakeholders, and projects such as  WOCEWA, in advancing women’s empowerment in the energy sector. The workshop is part of a week-long programme of technical engagements and hands-on pilot testing of the GTI Toolkit within selected ECREEE initiatives to ensure its practical application and long-term sustainability.
