A two-day consultation meeting on “Renewable Energy Investment” was held in Banjul under the auspices of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, ECREEE. The synergy was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of the Gambia in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO). The Executive Director of ECREEE, Mahama Kappiah who presided over the meeting described the energy sector as crucial for job creation. He said the use of clean energy in the sub region would help to reduce the environmental impact on fossil fuel.
A representative from UNIDO, Alois Mulanga also described renewable energy strategy as imperative in shaping the future of renewable energy in The Gambia. A representative from the country’s National Environment Agency NEA, Omar Bah disclosed that The Gambia is currently receiving grants from the Global Environmental Facility project aimed at improving the country’s energy sector. The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of the Gambia, Mr. Momodou Njie described the country’s dependency on petroleum products as un-sustainable and recommended more investment in the area of renewable energy.
