Electrification Financing Initiative of the European Union

The Electrification Financing Initiative, ElectriFI opens its doors on 15 April and interested parties can submit their project proposals through www.electrifi.org until 6 May. ElectriFI is an innovative mechanism to unlock, accelerate and leverage investments providing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy.

The Launch of the Africa Biochar Partnership

The Africa Biochar Partnership (ABP) which is an open continental platform for advancing the cause of Biochar Systems in Africa was launched on March 1st, 2016 in Nairobi - Kenya at the International Workshop on Biochar Systems for Africa, organized by the “Biochar Plus” project in collaboration with “Biochar for Sustainable Soils” project.

The energy sector contributes significantly to the key pillars of sustainable development – social, economic and environmental. And as a sector still on the way to achieving its goals, the challenges and issues faced by the sector has had negative consequences on women’s lives and livelihoods.  We do know for a fact that, at a gender-disaggregated level, the effects of the region’s energy challenges are borne more by women.

Increased use of renewable energy and efficiency in the utilization of energy generally, continues to be at the heart of the goal of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)’ Renewable Energy plans for today and projections for the future.

This goal which is to bring about sustainable energy development in the West African region, also envisages energy access and security as ECOWAS races past the 40th anniversary milestone.  

OFID signs grant agreement to boost sustainable Energy Development in the ECOWAS region

Vienna, Austria, February 22, 2016. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has signed new public sector loan and grant agreements totaling over US$60m to help boost socio-economic development in nine partner countries. The agreements were signed by OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish and high-ranking officials of the beneficiary countries, including HE Amara M. Konneh, Minister, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning of Liberia, HE Mubin Mirzaev, Deputy Minister of Finance of Uzbekistan and Mr.

The “Biochar Plus” project announces the launch of the “Africa Biochar Partnership – ABP”, an open continental platform for advancing Biochar Systems in Africa. The ABP will be presented on 1st March 2016 in Nairobi (Kenya), on the occasion of the International Workshop “Biochar Systems for Africa”, organized in collaboration with “Biochar for Sustainable Soils” project.

ECREEE - Developing Renewable Energy Sectors and Technologies in West Africa

Facing the facts: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is comprised of the 15 sovereign States of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo—united in their collective desire to achieve regional integration in all sectors of economic activity, as well as in social and cultural spheres.

PRIME-MINISTER OF CABO VERDE CONGRATULATES THE ROLE OF ECREEE

The first International Fair on Environment and Renewable Energy (FIAER 2016) emerged as an innovative and pioneering event in Cabo Verde and its purpose was to drive forward the Renewable Energy sector. In Cabo Verde,  the sector is considered to be a strategic pillar to substantially reduce external dependence through the production of clean and environmentally friendly energy for the construction of “a dynamic, competitive, innovative and sustainable economy, and of prosperity shared with all”.

Validation workshop of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Cooking Energy of The Gambia

The West Africa Clean Cooking Alliance (WACCA), in collaboration with The Gambian Ministry of Energy, held the validation workshop of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Cooking Energy on December 23rd, 2015 at the Baobab Resort Hotel, Bijilo.

10 MW Solar PV PPA signed in the Gambia

On January 8th 2016, the National Water & Electricity Company (NAWEC) has signed a 10 MW Solar PV Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 25 years duration with the Independent Power Producer Emerging Power (Gambia) Limited a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) between Z-One and Tryba Energy.
