CALL FOR PROJECT PROPOSAL: UNIDO GEF 5 Project on promoting the use of small to medium scale renewable energy systems in the productive sectors of the gambia

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is planning a project entitled: “Greening the productive sectors in Gambia: Promoting the use and integration of small and medium scale renewable energy systems in the productive sectors”, under the 5th Global Environment Facility (GEF) funding cycle. The project will be executed by the ECOWAS Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) with the support of the Ministry of Energy of the Gambia.

ECREEE COMMEMORATES ECOWAS DAY WITH PARTNERS IN CABO VERDE

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) in collaboration with the Cabo Verde Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the West African Institute and the Platform for African Communities Resident in Cabo Verde, recently commemorated ECOWAS Day with a workshop on Regional Integration.

ECREEE HELD ENERGY EFFICIENCY SEMINAR IN CABO VERDE

 The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency dubbed ECREEE in partnership with the Jean Piaget University of Cabo Verde recently organized a seminar on energy efficiency.

The seminar held on the 29th of May 2014, in commemoration of World Energy Day, was presided over by the Cabo Verde Minister of Tourism, Industry and Energy, Dr. Humberto Brito and graced by Jansenio Delgado a representative of ECREEE.

The second National Forum designed to evaluate the “Transformation agenda” of Cape Verde was held from 14th to 16th May 2014. The high profile meeting explored the Country's future economic prospects from now against year 2030, reviewed pertinent strategies and policies, and seek creative and innovative ideas to accelerate the Transformation Agenda.

ECREEE invited to a Side Event at the margins of the SE4ALL Launch in New York

The Executive Director of ECREEE has been invited to participate at the high-level side event "Regional Sustainable Energy Partnerships to Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) and SE4ALL in the Post-2015 Development Agenda”. The event organized by UNIDO and the Austrian Government, is schedule to take place on the 4th of June 2014, at the margins of the SE4ALL launching in New York.

Ministers of Energy adopt the East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE)

At the 9th Meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Sectoral Council on Energy, held on 21 April 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya, the Ministers of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda adopted the project document and the establishment of the East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE). In 2012 the five Member States directed the EAC Secretariat to take necessary actions in determining the needs and feasibility of such centre, in line with the ECREEE model in West Africa.

Ministers of Energy and Transport adopt the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE)

SPC-UNIDO Validation Workshop

The Second Meeting of Pacific Ministers of Energy and Transport, held from 2 to 4 April 2014, in Nadi, Fiji, endorsed the project document for the establishment of the Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE). The decision was in response to the official request of the Sustainable Energy Island Initiative (SIDS DOCK) by UNIDO, to assist the small island developing states in the Caribbean, Pacific, Indian Ocean and Africa in the establishment of regional sustainable energy centers.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS POWER AFRICA OFF-GRID ENERGY CHALLENGE

The United States African Development Foundation (USADF), in partnership with General Electric Africa (GE) and the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) are requesting proposals for the Power Africa Off-Grid Energy Challenge Round Two. In Round One, the Challenge awarded grants of up to US $100,000 to six winners in Kenya and Nigeria. In 2014, proposals of up to US $100,000 per award will be considered and approximately eighteen awards are anticipated.

GREEN PROJECT AWARDS CABO VERDE

 The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Spatial planning (MAHOT) and other partners organized a gala evening entitled “The Green Project Awards” on Saturday 10th May, at the National Assembly of Praia, Cape Verde. The event was aimed  to alert and educate the Cape Verdean society for environmental fragility and build a path to a sustainable future.

THE ECREEE 8th NEWSLETTER RELEASED

Discussions on the post-2015 development agenda are warming up. In September 2014, the UN General Assembly is due to consider new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A milestone was already reached this February when the Open Working Group, the body preparing the SDGs, produced a document outlining potential focus areas. Unlike the MDGs, one of these is energy.
