Wednesday, March 19, 2014 - 09:00 to Friday, March 21, 2014 - 16:00

ECREEE in partnership with the University of Geneva, Noveltis, the Energy Center, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Directorate of Energy, Cape Verde, are undertaking a project on “Promoting sustainable energy access through the use of geospatial technologies in West Africa”. The project, funded by the European Union under the ACP-EU Science and Technology Programme II (ACP S&T II), aims to contribute towards building and strengthening capacities in the areas of Science, Technology and Innovation in the ACP countries.

The project is intended to addres the existing knowledge and information barriers hindering development in the energy sector in West Africa, by improving the ECOWREX (www.ecowrex.org) Map framework. This will include the addition of new and improved resource maps, energy access maps, and developing a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) to help promote the science behind spatial data management, which is focused on increasing investment in the energy sector in the ECOWAS Region. The end product will be fully compliant with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), thereby aiding data interoperability, effective data processing, information sharing and knowledge transfer.

The kick-off meeting was held on the 19th to 21st of March at the ECREEE Secretariat in Praia, Cape Verde. The outcome of the meeting includes:

  • Detail discussion on the Work packages and roles of each partners
