ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Workshop

From the 27 - 29 of April 2016, the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the International Renewable Energy Agency, and GIZ with support of the Spanish Development Cooperation, the Austrian Development Cooperation and Agence de l'Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l'Energie (ADEME) will organize a 3 day workshop on the Implementation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plans and SE4ALL Investment prospectus.
 
The workshop comes at the backdrop the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy (EREP) and the ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy (EEEP), adopted by the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in July 2013. Based on a mandate by the ECOWAS authorities to coordinate the implementation of the regional policies as well the SE4ALL Initiative in West Africa, ECREEE has supported the 15 ECOWAS Member States to develop National Renewable Energy Action Plans, National Energy Efficiency Action Plans, and the SE4ALL Action.

The workshop serves as a platform to demonstrate ECREEEs commitment to continued support to countries in the implementation of the ECOWAS Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy (EE) National Action Plans and Sustainable Energy For All (SE4ALL) Action Agendas to ensure the achievement of the regional policies.
 
The meeting will feature discussions on the development of investment Prospectuses (IPs) for operationalizing the sustainable actions action plans, the need for robust monitoring to track performance of countries towards the achievement of the regional targets, presentation of the West Africa Clean Energy Corridor (WACEC)concept as an opportunity to develop and integrate utility scale renewable energy based power into the West African power systems, and also discussions on ways to align the Intended National determine contributions (INDCs) of countries with the implementation of the Action Plans and Sustainable Energy For All (SE4ALL) Action Agendas.
 
A day has also been dedicated to the Regional Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling meeting on the development of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air-conditioners and refrigerators in the ECOWAS region.
 
The overall objectives of the workshop are manifold and include the:

·     Presentation of the ECOWAS consolidated national Sustainable Energy Action Plans

·     Validation of the ECOWAS SE4ALL investment prospectus framework

·     Validation of the Regional Monitoring Framework for the Action Plans

·     Validation of the ECREEE Climate Change Program

·     Validation of the Concept of the West African Clean Energy Corridor Initiative

·     Validation of the ECOWAS Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for Air-Conditioners and Refrigerators.

The event will feature the participation of the Directors for Energy, the ECREEE National Focal Institutions and the SE4ALL focal Points and representatives from Standards Bodies from each Member state.
