CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR ENERGY POLICY RESEARCH – APPLICATION OPENS 1 OCTOBER 2015

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) is launching a Research Grant Program and is inviting research teams to submit proposals for policy research in any of the energy fields (e.g. energy technologies, energy finance, energy economics, energy policy, energy and the environment/climate change, energy and development, energy law etc.) Teams will receive a grant amount of not more than €1500 to contribute to the formulation of evidence-based energy policies or strategies in the region.

The German-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lisbon is organising, in close cooperation with the Directorate General for Energy of Cape Verde (DGE) and with the support of Cape Verde Investments (CI), the Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sotavento and Barlavento, the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the German consultant RENAC (Renewables Academy), the 1^stBusiness Mission for German companies in Cape Verde. This initiative will take place between the 12^th and 16^th of October 2015 and is coordinated with the activities of the 1^stCape Verde International Fair for Renewable Energies.

From the 14th to18th of September 2015, over two hundred participants from the governments, high level policy and decision makers, project promoters, investors and international partners, as well as private sector players and civil society from within the ECOWAS region gathered for the ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Policy & Investment High Level Forum in Abidjan.

The Second West Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing (WAFCEF2) awards, in which entrepreneurs showcase their projects in the area of clean and renewable energy, opened Thursday, September 17 at the African Development Bank headquarters in Abidjan. The Forum provides finalists with an opportunity to present their projects to financiers and investors.

Ivoire Hydro Energy scoops top prize at second West Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing awards

Etty Ekolan Alain is the winner of the top prize at the second West Africa Forum for Clean Energy Financing (WAFCEF2).

Alain’s project, Ivoire Hydro Energy, is a start-up in Côte d’Ivoire. It seeks to design, construct and operate a 44 megawatt hydro power plant on the country’s Bandama River under a concession agreement signed with the government in December 2013.

“I feel a lot of emotion for my project to have been selected winner of this award. I am proud of all the work done by my team,” he said after he was announced the winner on Thursday evening.

ECREEE Organizes Strategy Meeting on Supporting ECOWAS Countries to Address Climate Change

The ECOWAS region is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the impacts of climate change. Changes in climate have caused impacts on natural and human systems and all development sectors in the region.

Droughts, natural resource degradation, floods, reduced agricultural productivity, coastal land erosion and salinization of coastal lands are some of the impacts of climate change evidenced in the ECOWAS region.

Head of States confirm Barbados as the host country of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE)

The Thirty-Sixth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held at Bridgetown, Barbados, 2-4 July 2015, endorsed the establishment of the "Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE)" as the implementation hub for sustainable energy activities and projects within the region.

The SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) to be hosted by Namibia

The Energy Ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) approved the establishment of the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE). Namibia was confirmed as the host country of the Secreariat of the Centre. The decision was taken during the 34th meeting of SADC Energy Ministers, held in July in Johannesburg.

The Ministers commended the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and Austrian Development Agency (ADA) for their contributions during the preparatory process of the centre.
