Launch of activities to commemorate the 48th anniversary of ECOWAS in Praia

Praia, May 4, 2023 - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) completes on May 28, 48 years of its establishment, and a range of activities began today in the city of Praia, aiming at informing the general public about some of the projects and activities that are being implemented by the community in the country. During the month of May, sports and cultural activities will be held, which highlight the valorization of crossbreeding and cultural exchange between people, as well as raising awareness for a deeper understanding of the role of the Community.

Local stakeholders trained to build smart stoves in Sierra Leone

ECREEE co-organized a training to support local manufacturers to build smart cookstoves. Held from 24 – 29 April 2023, at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) in Kono District, Sierra Leone, the training was organized in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Global Environment Fund, Salone Business Women’s Hub, the Playhouse Foundation and the Ministry of Energy, Sierra Leone.

AEEP Energy Talks Explores the Potential of Renewable Hydrogen for Decarbonising Value Chains and Driving Development in Africa and the EU

On 3 May 2023, (14:00–15:30 CEST), the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) will host the tenth AEEP Energy Talks on “Utilising Renewable Hydrogen to Decarbonise Value Chains and Drive Development in Africa and the EU”

The virtual AEEP Energy Talks will focus on the potential of renewable hydrogen to transform the energy landscape on both continents, and the opportunities and challenges faced in renewable hydrogen production and distribution.

ECOWAS Industry Ministers adopt regional Standards on standalone solar systems and solar PV mini-grids

The Meeting of ECOWAS Industry Ministers held on Thursday, 30 March 2023 in Banjul, The Gambia considered and adopted six (6) Standards on solar energy. This was based on the recommendations of the experts of ECOWAS ministries of industry Meeting, which held from 27 -29 March 2023 in Banjul.

ECOWAS Energy Ministers Adopt the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Policy

The Meeting of ECOWAS Energy Ministers on Friday, 24 March 2023 in Bissau, Guinea Bissau considered and adopted the updated ECOWAS Energy Policy, the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Code, and the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Policy. This was based on the recommendations of the ECOWAS Energy Experts Meeting, which held from 22 -23 March 2023 in Bissau.

Building the Regional Energy Market for an equitable Energy Transition

Freetown, March 20-25, 2023 - The ECOWAS Parliament Joint Committee hosted a delocalized meeting on "Building the Regional Energy Market for an Equitable Energy Transition" in Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital, with crucial steps taken aiming at improving power generation in the West African sub-region, toward an equitable energy transition. 

The meeting's objectives were to inform Parliament about the ECOWAS Commission's plan to ensure: 

Stakeholder consultation framework for off-grid rural electrification in the Liptako-Gourma region takes shape

With the start of discussions with stakeholders, the enabling environment for off-grid rural electrification in the three member states of the Liptako-Gourma region has been revived. In Burkina Faso, a stakeholder conference was held in Ouagadougou on February 16, 2023, while in Mali it was held in Bamako on March 20 and in Niger, the consultation meeting was held in Niamey on March 23.
