ECREEE launches scheme to create qualified solar workforce

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has unveiled an initiative aimed at improving the skills of solar installers in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The program, titled the Regional Certification Scheme (RCS), aims to accelerate the deployment of  solar energy across the region, via the creation of a regional standard certification scheme for installers, and the development of regional renewable energy standards.

Nigeria to Start Building $5.8 Billion Power Plant in 2018

Nigeria plans to start building a $5.8 billion hydro-power plant in the eastern Mambila region this year, after it agrees on loan terms with China’s Export-Import Bank.

“We hope to break ground this year if we can conclude the financing,” Power, Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola said in a Jan. 23 interview in the capital, Abuja. “Contracts are in place. We are good to go.”

Prime Minister of Cabo Verde inaugurates ECREEE projects in Santo Antão

Santo Antão, 19/January/2018 – The Prime Minister of Cabo Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, inaugurates a half a million USD project implemented by ECREEE to promote rural electrification based on solar energy. The projects were co-funded by the Government of Cabo Verde, GEF SGP, UNIDO and the Municipality of Ribeira Grande, benefitting two villages.

Renewable Power Generation Cost Drops Considerably

After years of steady cost decline for solar and wind technologies, renewable power is becoming an increasingly competitive way to meet new generation needs.

According to the report Renewable Power Generation Costs in 2017, by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the cost of onshore wind power generation dropped 23% and 73% concerning to the electricity generated by PV systems since 2010. Furthermore it is projected that the cost of solar power will reduce 50% until 2020.

ECREEE and POWERCHINA to boost sustainable energy in West Africa

January 10th, 2018 – The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the field of sustainable energy development in the ECOWAS region.
